Barter vs paid collaborations: when to say yes to free products
How to decide between barter and paid brand collabs as an Indian creator: what a product is really worth, how to set limits, and what to know about TDS on gifts (194R).
Barter (a free product or experience in return for content) is how many creators get their first collabs. It can be a good deal, or a lot of unpaid work. Here’s how to tell.
When barter makes sense
- You’d buy the product anyway, and it fits your niche.
- It’s a brand you want on your page as past work.
- The ask is small (a story or two), not a scripted reel.
- The product’s value is close to what you’d charge for the work.
When to ask for money
- The brand wants a reel, several posts, or usage rights for ads.
- The product is worth much less than your rate.
- They want exclusivity or a fixed date.
- It’s a brand with a marketing budget that pays other creators.
Hybrid deals
The middle ground: product plus a smaller fee. Offer it when a brand says “we only do barter”: “I’d love to. For a reel I charge ₹X; with the product I can do it for ₹Y.”
Set clear terms, even for barter
- What you’ll make and by when.
- How many rounds of changes.
- Whether they can use your content as ads (that should be paid).
- Whether you keep the product or return it.
Tax: TDS on gifts (Section 194R)
Since July 2022, a business that gives you products or benefits worth more than ₹20,000 in a financial year may deduct TDS of 10% under Section 194R of the Income Tax Act. CBDT guidance says products you return after making the content are generally not treated as a benefit. This changes from time to time and depends on your situation: check with your CA.
